Veere Di Wedding and the Great Indian Savitri Saga! The other day women in my office and even men were gossiping about the movie, and since I really dint like the movie, I wondered what they gossiped about with such enchantment! Then one of the girls asked me “ Hey Ruchika, don’t you know about the controversy around the movie” I instantly felt stupid since I was the only one in the group who had actually seen the movie!
So I googled!
–the *that* scene in Veere Di Wedding.
Swara Bhaskar’s masturbation scene in the film looked like a fun sequence but the discussion around the film has reduced it to something else. It was essentially showing the back story of Swara’s character. She was not happy in her marriage and had no chemistry with her husband. If it was a man featured in that scene, it would have been perfectly normal and a healthy thing to do.
At that moment it struck me, that pleasure was still a taboo in our country! It’s not about men, women, it’s about how can you pleasure yourself! It’s about we live in a “shh don’t talk about sex” society! We girls talk about our escapades, relationships, wonderful romance and steamy nights! You may call it a talk for validation, excitement, fun. But sometimes things go really funny and is a great laughter club! You keep it going! You keep it spiced up!
One of my favorite characters of all time soap operas are Samantha Jones from Sex and the city played by Kim Caterral, the free willed, independent , I don’t give a flying fuck to what you think character. The Second Eddie Britt from Desperate housewives Played by Nichollete Sheridan, who is the only bold, fearless, independent woman on the show who has her shit together. But they have a bad light on them throughout the season, women gossip about them, their own friends judge them. Television is a reflection of our society and is true in a lot of sense. Desperate as everyone is in both the season, do nothing apart from being the “miserable desperate, I will fall for the first guy who proposes to me genre”. On the other hand the woman who have taken charge of their careers, sex life, relationships, finances are looked down upon because they don’t comply to convenient societal standards that most of us fit into.
Women think again! Do you really want to live on the mercy of men?
